Paint Shop Pro » Walking in water

To make a horse look natural in water you need fading, ripples, splashes, a shadow and a reflection. You need a background pic with shallow water. Try to find one where it would be possible for a horse to walk. A horse would not be standing in the middle in the sea or in a fjord, but near land.

I’ll use this background picture:

And this horse picture:

I have to resize the horse a bit or it will be out of scale. And I flip it to make it look like it’s walking into the sea instead of out of. I paste it on the background as a new layer.

Fading

My horse looks like it’s walking on the sea, so I fade off some of his legs. I use the eraser tool with a big size and 0 hardness. Remove as much as you think look good. Think of how deep the water is when you decide how much feet you have to cut of.

If the water is very clear, and you can see the bottom, it’s better to fade the feet instead of cutting them all of. Since the water is so clear you should be able to see the feet thru the water.

Splashes

Create a new layer over the horse layer. Use a one pixel paint brush. Use the eye dropper tool to choose a color that matches the water around the horse’s feet. Draw the splashes on by hand.

The splashes doesn’t look very natural, so we have to work on that a bit. Duplicate the splash layer, and set the top layer’s opacity to 0 (we’ll use it later). Now, use the smudge tool. I use size 10, hardness 0 and opacity 50.

I set the opacity of the top layer (the duplicated) to higher than 0 so it shows a bit. I’ve made the un-smudged splashes show a bit, but not much.

Ripples

Create a new layer over the duplicated splash layer. Use the same 1 pixel brush tool as you used to make splashes. Draw circles around the hoofs.

Use the same smudge tool as when you made splashes, and smudge the ripples in the circular formation.

I haven’t spent much time on them so they don’t look as good as they could if you work a bit more on them :)

Shadow

Looking at the trees, the shadow should go from the horse and to the left. I create a new layer, and use a black soft paint brush. Check the tutorial called Natural shadow.

Reflection

If the water is still, you will see a reflection from the horse coming towards you. So what you do, is duplicating the horse layer:

Flip it…

… and adjust it so it fits. The reflection should meet the horse where the horse comes out of the water. Reduce the opacity a bit. If the water is wavy smudge the reflection a bit with the smudge tool:
