Guest tutorials » Gimp » Recoloring black and white pictures

I’m Krupa (2497667) although I’ve kinda quit Horseland, I still make graphics. I’ve been using gimp for only about 3 months so it’s really not that hard if you give it a chance.

Step 1: Open up your pic (wow wasn’t that easy)

This step now is optional:

Step 2. If it’s not already black and white you can make it black and white by going to >layers >colors >desaturate and then it will be black and white! Funny how that works... (I don’t think you really need a picture for this)

And our picture now looks like this:

Step 4. select the Freehand tool and choose a feather size, I chose 15.3, but you can choose whatever (the larger the number: the more faded) If you don’t want a feather at all and you want to be really precise with your selecting, that’s fine.

Step 5. Now this is the hard part. Go around the object you want to recolor. You might have to keep trying over again but eventually you’ll get it.

Step 6. Finally the fun part. Go to >layers >colors >colorize (make sure your selection is still selected) and a box will pop up: play around with the lever until it’s a good color.

And here is the picture with it colorized:

You can also go around the whole pic to make the whole picture colored- if I do that here is what it looks like:
