Paint Shop Pro v7 » Fantasy background

In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a regular landscape picture into a fantasy looking landscape. I'll use this picture:

Open the layer palette (press L on your key board) and right click on the only layer there, and choose duplicate. If it says "background" instead of Layer 1, it's a good idea to copy the picture over to a new image. (select all, copy, paste as new image – all these are found under Edit in the top tool menu.

You now have two layers. Add a new layer, by clicking on the white box in the top left corner in the layer palette (in the red circle), drop and drag this layer to the bottom. Then set the top layer to Hard light and the middle one to luminance.

Color the bottom layer (the one called layer 2) with a greyish purple color. I've used this one:

And the picture looks like this:

Add a Gaussian blur to the middle layer – the one set to luminance:

I used radius 2,00. My picture now looks like this:

You can even smudge the edges on different contents in the picture by using the smudge tool . I used size 30 and hardness 0, and dragged the mouse arrow along the mountain edge and the sea. I used circular motions over the sky. Result:
