Paint Shop Pro v7 » Faded edges

Some pictures have those faded edges, where the background shows more and more through the picture edges. There are two ways of doing this, and which is best depends on what type of picture you are using it on, and if you want the fading to be in a straight line and consistent, or if you want it to have a rougher look.

Method 1

This method fades in a straight line, so the picture will look like this:

First, colorize the bottom layer with the color you want. I’m making a horse picture, so I want the background to be horseland purple. Then, paste the background on to the background, as a new layer (Edit -> paste -> as a new layer, or ctrl + L). Then you choose the tool called selection (blue circle), go to the tool options (if you don’t have the tool option box up, press the letter o), and choose the feather to be more than 0. The bigger number, the more feathering, and the softer edges.

I’ve chosen the feathering to be 18, and you saw the result. So you have set the feathering to be 18, and you make a square around one of the edges (make sure you are on the background picture’s layer):

When you let go of the mouse button, the square will be bigger than you chose, cuz you get the feathering around, remember? So it looks like this:

Now, press the delete key on you key board, and woalla the edge is faded. Do the same to the other sides of the background picture...

Method 2

This method is good if you want the edges to bee a bit more… bumpy? The picture will look like this when I’m done:

So start with coloring the bottom layer with the color you want as background. Since I’m making a horse picture, I choose horseland purple. Then I paste the background as a new layer on top of the background. I now choose the tool Eraser, the same tool you crop of the background with. Make it big and soft:

Then you just erase the stuff you want. I want the background to fade out more and more, to the right, so I just erase the background on the right..
