Paint Shop Pro v7 » Black and white with colored details

I'll show you two different ways of creating a black and white picture with colored details. One is similar to any other picture where you put a horse on a background, the other is less time consuming but has it's limitations.

Method 1

I'll start with this background picture:

And this horse. Crop of the background on the horse like usual:

Now, to create the black/white effect on the background choose hue/saturation/lightness in the top tool bar in colors.

You'll get this box up:

Set lightness to 0 and hue to -100. The picture will now be black and white. If you just choose "grey scale" in the top tool bar under colors, everything you paste on to the background will be black and white… that is not what we want. The background now looks like this:

Now, paste the horse on to the background. And the result:

Method 2

This method doesn't require any cutting and is easy to use on pictures with not so many details. I'll use this image:

Add a new layer underneath the picture by clicking on the "create layer" button in the layer palette. If you cant see the layer palette, click L on your key board. The button is located in the top left corner:

You'll get a box up where you can choose settings, leave them as they are and click ok. The new layer will be on top of the previous layer, so drag and drop the new layer underneath the old one in the layer palette. Now, color the new bottom layer white.

In the layer palette, choose "luminance" on the background picture layer (layer 1):

The picture will now look like this:

Use the eraser brush, and erase the white color on the bottom layer, so the details you want colored gets colored:

Keep erasing white background until all the details you want are colored. Result:

You don't have to use white on the bottom layer. Look how it looks with indigo color:
